UK Packaging Pact to Revolutionise Packaging Landscape from 2026

The UK Packaging Pact is set to commence in April 2026, marking a ten-year commitment to revolutionise the nation's packaging landscape. This successor to the UK Plastics Pact, which concluded in 2025, aims to optimise packaging, scale recycling and refill initiatives, support circular infrastructure investment, and enhance traceability.

The pact, announced by WRAP, builds on the success of its predecessor. During the UK Plastics Pact, a remarkable 99.8% of problematic plastic items were eliminated. Additionally, 70% of plastic packaging became reusable, recyclable, or compostable, with 59% effectively recycled. An average of 26% recycled content was achieved.

The UK Packaging Pact seeks to avoid virgin materials, boost recyclability and recycled content, upscale recycling and refill systems, and improve traceability. Companies can already express their interest and learn more about the pact through WRAP's website and the Pact framework.

The UK Packaging Pact, running from 2026 to 2035, is poised to build on the achievements of the UK Plastics Pact. Its ambitious goals include optimising packaging, scaling recycling and refill initiatives, and enhancing traceability. With companies already showing interest, the pact is set to transform the UK's relationship with packaging in the coming decade.
