UK Rolls Out New EV Grant, Slashing Prices of 30+ Models by Up to £3,750
The UK government has rolled out a new electric vehicle (EV) grant, slashing prices of certain models by up to £3,750. Over 30 electric cars from various manufacturers, including Alpine, DS, Citroen, Cupra, Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, Vauxhall, and Volkswagen, now qualify for a £1,500 discount. The grant targets EVs priced between £37,000 and £42,000.
The grant's value depends on the car's environmental credentials and production energy sustainability. EVs meeting specific zero-emission criteria and priced under £32,000 qualify for the full £3,750 discount. Only two models, the Ford Puma Gen-E and the Ford E-Tourneo Courier, currently meet these criteria. The Puma Gen-E, priced from £26,245, offers a WLTP range of up to 233 miles and charges at up to 100 kW. The E-Tourneo Courier, priced from £29,940, has a WLTP range of 177 miles and can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 35 minutes using a 100 kW rapid charger.
Dr. Ashley Fly from Loughborough University explained the absence of Korean and Chinese EVs on the list. He attributed this to their production processes and energy sources, which may not align with the grant's sustainability criteria.
The new EV grant simplifies the process of purchasing an electric car, making it more affordable for buyers. With over 30 models now eligible for a £1,500 discount, and two models qualifying for the full £3,750 discount, the UK government aims to encourage the adoption of cleaner vehicles.
