Ukraine's Drone Strikes Cripple Russian Oil Refineries, Fueling War Pressure
Russia's oil refineries are facing significant disruptions, with about 70 percent of downtime attributed to Ukrainian drone strikes. This has effectively shut down around a quarter of all Russian oil refineries, impacting the fuel supply for the Russian military and hindering the country's ability to finance the war through oil exports.
Ukraine's strategy to disrupt fuel supplies has seen drone attacks on key refineries, including the Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery. This facility, with a processing capacity of 15 million tons of crude oil per year, has been significantly impacted. If it remains offline, it could exacerbate fuel shortages in Russia. Residents reported seeing strong flames and a large cloud of smoke over the refinery following a major fire. However, the governor Mikhail Yevraev has stated that the fire was not caused by drone attacks. Despite this, by the end of September, refinery downtime in Russia reached a historic high of 38 percent.
The ongoing disruptions to Russian oil refineries, driven by Ukrainian drone strikes and other factors, are putting significant pressure on Russia's fuel supply and its ability to finance the war. The impact on the Yaroslavnefteorgsintes refinery, one of Russia's largest, underscores the strategic importance of these facilities and the potential consequences of their downtime.
