Unable to thrive with generators: Adesina's view on Nigeria's economy

In an impassioned plea, Akinwumi Adesina, Africa Development Bank's (AfDB) president, has exhorted the Nigerian government to prioritize power issues for the nation's growth and development. Our website reports Adesina's address at the 20th Anniversary Dinner of Chapel Hill Denham in Lagos last Monday.

"Without dependable power, Nigeria's economy will be trapped in a sluggish development tract, bereft of transformation. You can't industrialize, compete, nor create jobs at scale barring a steady power supply," he stated.

Adesina highlighted that energy is not merely about illumination, but productivity, competitiveness, and prosperity. This underscores the critical importance of power in driving Nigeria's economic growth.

Emphasizing the inadequacy of relying on diesel generators in today's global digital economy, Adesina advocated for the establishment of a 21st-century energy grid powered by clean, reliable, and scalable solutions.

Being well-aware that such a transition would require the private sector's involvement, Adesina firmly urged investors to take active steps in Nigeria's energy sector to tackle the chronic power problem.

"Digital economies can't flourish on diesel generators. We must engineer a modern grid, fueled by green, reliable, and adaptable energy solutions. The private sector needs to lead the energy transition," he asserted.

Moreover, Adesina implored the government to establish clear and attractive energy policies to attract investors. He pointed out the necessity of a favorable regulatory environment that ensures certainty and bankable agreements for investors.

"A favorable market and investor-friendly policies are essential. Nigeria could become the hub for green energy, surpassing its own borders, with the right conditions and regulations," he added.
