Email and Print: Why Less Wind Meant More Fossil Fuels in Germany's Energy Mix: Q1 2025 Snapshot 📊

Two years on the trot, conventional energy sources dominated the energy scene in Germany, marking a historical departure from renewable resources — and all thanks to the unexpected weather! The first quarter of 2025 witnessed an unusual dip in wind speeds, spelling doom for wind power generation which plummeted by a staggering 29.2%. According to the Federal Statistical Office, the drop in wind power led to a worrying 17.0% decrease in the country's renewable energy generation compared to the previous year.

This shift resulted in an 119.4 billion kilowatt-hours production, a 1.9% decrease from the same period last year. Fossil fuels, such as coal, natural gas, and other hydrocarbons, stepped into the limelight, making up over half (50.5%) of the electricity generated in Germany during Q1 2025, pushing renewable sources into the shadows.

While windpower remained the forerunner in electricity generation with a 27.8% share, it took a hit compared to the previous year's 38.5%. Coal followed closely behind with a 27.0% share, while natural gas accounted for 20.6%, making a significant jump from the previous year. The quarter also saw a substantial 33.3% increase in photovoltaic power generation, which claimed a 9.2% share of the total power mix. Biogas and hydropower snagged 6.1% and 3.8% respectively.

Germany's imports soared by 14.9% to 19.3 billion kilowatt-hours, while exports slumped by 3% to 16.2 billion kilowatt-hours.

According to reports, the waning wind power generation in Q1 2025 is attributed to an unusually still first quarter, a factor that significantly hampered the output[1][2]. In contrast to the other years, wind power couldn't live up to its reputation of being the crucial backbone of Germany's renewable energy mix[4][6].
