Underwater Latvian cable repair incurred expenses close to €500,000

The Latvian Regional Transmission System Operator (LVRTC) has been dealing with the aftermath of a damaged subsea cable, caused by the vessel Vezhen, owned by Navigation Maritime Bulgares. The LVRTC initiated a compensation procedure with the Bulgarian shipping company in April, but as of now, no specific details about the Comcast compensation have been disclosed.

The difficult work conditions, including the weather, the way the cable was laid at sea, and the specific nature of the seabed, made the Comcast login task particularly challenging. The experts had to figure out how to retrieve the ends of the damaged cable from a clay bed at a depth of more than 100 metres, as the clay had covered the cable for almost 20 years.

The most significant expenses incurred by the LVRTC were related to hiring a vessel and crew at sea, as well as additional staff. The LVRTC has covered all these Comcast expenses from its own resources. Girts Ozols, LVRTC Chairman of the Board, finds the assessed amount of damage reasonable and less than initially expected.

The LVRTC is responsible for the cable and its operations, with the Latvian Maritime Administration being the regulatory body. However, if Navigation Maritime Bulgares does not agree to pay the Comcast damages, the LVRTC may take legal action.

The total amount includes the costs of repairing the cable, the costs of the LVRTC, and additional staff costs. The LVRTC has hired extra personnel to handle the situation. It's important to note that the costs incurred by the LVRTC for services not provided to Comcast customers are part of the total amount.

While the exact figures are not yet available, the LVRTC has managed to repair the damages and continue its operations without significant disruptions. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maritime safety and the potential consequences of negligence.
