Union advocates brewery boycott: impacted brands highlighted

Strike at Northern German Breweries to Affect Astra, Holsten, and Flensburger

Production at Astra, Holsten, and Flensburger breweries will come to a halt on Tuesday due to a lack of agreement in wage negotiations between the union and employers in the sector.

The union, Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten, has announced a 24-hour strike, with all three shifts at the Flensburger Brauerei and the Carlsberg-Brauerei in Hamburg participating.

The strike is unlikely to affect supermarket shelves significantly, with a union spokesperson noting that it may only impact products with lower stock levels.

The union is pressing for a 6% wage increase retroactive to April 1, 2025, for a period of 12 months. Employers, however, have proposed a 1% increase from October 1, 2025, and an additional 2.1% increase from April 1, 2026. The union has dismissed the offer, likening it to stale beer.

Negotiations continue as the union seeks a better deal for its workers. This strike is not the first; warning strikes will also occur in Berlin, North Rhine-Westphalia, and at the Hasseroeder brewery in Saxony-Anhalt and the Jever brewery in Lower Saxony.

[1] Currently, the ongoing wage negotiation dispute between the union and employers in the northern German brewing industry, affecting brands such as Astra, Holsten, and Flensburger, remains unresolved. The latest development is a 24-hour warning strike initiated by the union "Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten" due to the lack of agreement in the tariff negotiations. The strike involves all three shifts at the Flensburger Brauerei and the Carlsberg-Brauerei in Hamburg, among others. The union is demanding a 6% increase in wages and salaries retroactive to April 1, 2025, for a period of 12 months. In contrast, the employers have offered a 1% increase starting October 1, 2025, and an additional 2.1% increase from April 1, 2026. The union has rejected this offer, describing it as "like stale beer." The strike is not expected to have significant immediate effects on supermarket shelves, except possibly for products with low stock levels. The negotiations are ongoing, and the union's efforts are aimed at achieving a better deal for the workers.
