Union Budget 2021-22 Prioritizes Green Recovery with Rs 1.97 Lakh Crore Investment
The Union Budget 2021-22 has prioritised environmental sustainability and green recovery, with a significant investment of Rs 1.97 lakh crores over five years in 13 sectors for technology research and innovation. This includes a Rs 50,000 crore fund for health and technology innovation, and a Rs 1,41,678 crore allocation for waste management and reducing single-use plastic under the Urban Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0.
The Budget has set aside Rs 2,217 crores for air pollution control in 42 urban centres with a million-plus population, with a particularly high amount of Rs 2,217 crore allocated for the Delhi-NCR region. A national hydrogen mission is planned to generate hydrogen from green power sources, with an investment of Rs 2,500 crores in solar and renewable energy sources. The 'Health and Wellness' pillar integrates air pollution management, waste control, and potable water supply with a five-year plan. Additionally, the Deep Ocean Mission, with a budget of Rs 4,000 crores, aims to map biodiversity and climate change issues in ocean depths.
The Union Budget 2021-22 demonstrates a long-term vision for environmental sustainability, aiming to put India on a path of green recovery post the Covid-19 pandemic.
