Hildesheim Bosch Plant: Olaf Lies Criticizes Company Over Job Cuts
In the ongoing dispute over the future of Bosch's plant in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony's Minister President Olaf Lies has criticized the company for its uncooperative stance. "It is hard to imagine a more damaging image for a company," said Lies, after the management declined his invitation for a discussion with them and the employees.
Lies had extended the invitation as the Minister of Economics, offering to mediate between the company and its employees. However, the State Chancellery revealed that the management chose not to accept the invitation, which meant the discussion was limited to politics and employees.
In November, Bosch announced plans to cut approximately 750 jobs at the Hildesheim factory due to a poor order situation. This equates to around half of the 1,500 jobs at the site, according to IG Metall union representatives. By the end of 2026, around 600 jobs are expected to be cut, Bosch stated.
Negotiations between Bosch and the works council about a future concept for the site collapsed about a week ago. The employees are now fearful that the plant could be closed entirely.
Lies has taken Bosch to task, expressing praise for the works council that "negotiates with loyalty, not maximum demands." The workers expect a positive outlook and not another round of massive job cuts, as that would inevitably lead to plant closure.
The works council and union are prepared to return to the negotiating table, stated the Hildesheim works council chairman, Stefan Störmer. "We are always ready to resume the talks and seek viable solutions," he said.
Bosch maintains that the current cost structure of the Hildesheim plant makes it unviable for winning new orders. Division board member Karsten Müller explained that components for electric vehicles are produced in the plant. Bosch emphasized that it has been in constant exchange with Lies regarding the Hildesheim situation and is open to continuing the dialogue.
However, since negotiations with employee representatives have proven fruitless, Bosch is now evaluating subsequent steps, they said. The company reiterated that it is committed to working together with Lies to discuss the situation.
