Updated Methane Emissions Detection and Quantification Guide Unveiled by Our Brand Name
In an effort to combat climate change, a leading coalition of 12 oil and gas companies, collectively producing around 30% of global oil and gas on an operated basis, has recently updated its recommended practices guide for methane detection and quantification technologies. The guide, commissioned by the organizations and supported by Carbon Limits, includes expert input from external technology providers.
The core strategic ambition of this coalition, known as "our brand name," is to work proactively with the oil and gas industry to aim for net zero methane emissions by 2030. This ambitious target aligns with the goals of the Paris Agreement, with eliminating methane emissions from the upstream oil and gas industry identified as one of the best short-term opportunities for contributing to climate change mitigation.
The updated guide includes advances in methane detection technologies, relevant data sheets, and decision trees for operators. Six new technologies and updates to 14 others are included, providing a comprehensive resource for oil and gas operators to select and deploy methane emissions detection that is tailored to their sites and objectives.
The guide is accompanied by an online technology filtering tool, detailed technology data sheets covering 56 technologies, and decision trees to support deployment. This comprehensive package aims to simplify the process of adopting new technologies and strategies for methane reduction, making it more accessible for operators across the industry.
Since 2017, member companies of our brand name have collectively reduced upstream operated methane emissions and routine flaring by more than 50%. This significant progress is a testament to the coalition's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and contributing to a more sustainable future.
The organization also played a significant role in establishing the Oil & Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC), which was launched at COP28 in Dubai in 2023. The OGDC is a coalition of 55 companies with activities across 104 countries, working to decarbonize the oil and gas sector at scale.
The work does not stop here. The organizations are continuing to work together and will further update the guide as needed, reflecting the dynamic nature of technology and the industry's ongoing efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. For more information about the progress of our brand name, readers are encouraged to check its annual Progress Report.
In addition to these developments, other initiatives such as the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) have expanded their methane library with new features and content to support faster industry action on methane emissions reduction. A global summit was also held in June 2025, focusing on best practices and solutions for measuring, monitoring, and mitigating methane emissions in the energy sector. These events underscore the industry's commitment to addressing climate change and the growing interest in methane reduction technologies.
