Urgent Recruitment: Implementation of Climate-Friendly Technologies for Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Floriculture Businesses in Ecuador

In a bid to bolster the climate resilience and sustainability of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Ecuador's floriculture sector, the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) has launched a new initiative. This programme focuses on evaluating and adopting climate technologies, providing tailored advice, and fostering capacity building.

Ecuador, home to the Amazon rainforest and the Andes mountains, is seeking assistance to address the urgent technology needs of its MSMEs. The process for experts to apply to provide technical assistance is straightforward. It involves a country-driven request submitted via Ecuador’s National Designated Entity (NDE) using a formal request form, followed by experts responding to CTCN calls for experts related to specific technology needs or sectors.

The key objectives of this initiative are multifaceted. They include supporting MSMEs in adopting climate mitigation and adaptation technologies, providing tailored advice on technology needs, and strengthening capacity at the national and local levels. The expected outcomes are equally ambitious, aiming to deploy and demonstrate suitable climate technologies, enhance technical capacity, and promote sustainable development in one of Ecuador’s important economic sectors.

The technical assistance is expected to boost resilience by identifying technologies that improve water efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable practices. This is particularly crucial given the ongoing challenges like water scarcity and the need for climate-resilient technologies that continue to threaten the sustainability of businesses in Ecuador's floriculture sector.

The floriculture sector in Ecuador is significant in the context of its economy and employment, despite the challenges it faces. External shocks like COVID-19 have impacted the industry, reducing international demand. However, some businesses have shifted to domestic sales and e-commerce to adapt.

Expected outcomes include implementation plans, stakeholder engagement, technology prioritization, capacity building, and developing business models to enhance the value chain. Key objectives include assessing climate technologies, securing financing, and building technical capacities, with a focus on gender inclusion.

If not a CTCN network member, application is possible. The CTCN will provide technical assistance to Ecuador's floriculture MSMEs, addressing challenges like high energy and labor costs by exploring innovative, cost-saving solutions. Climate variability affects the profitability of MSMEs in Ecuador's floriculture sector and hinders the adoption of new technologies.

The CTCN is seeking experts for a technical assistance solicitation in October 2024. For more information, potential applicants can refer to the UN Global Market Place (UNGM) and UNPD. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and climate-resilient future for Ecuador's floriculture sector.

  1. To contribute to a more sustainable floriculture sector in Ecuador, experts are invited to apply for a technical assistance solicitation by the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN) in October 2024, focusing on the adoption of climate-resilient technologies, securing financing, and building capacities, particularly in environmental science and finance.
  2. In line with Ecuador's efforts to address the urgent technology needs of its Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in the floriculture sector, this initiative aims to deploy and demonstrate suitable climate technologies, enhance technical capacity across various sectors of the environment, finance, and industry, and promote sustainable development, thereby improving the sector's resilience to climate change and environmental challenges.
