Vietnam's Nuclear Ambitions Boosted by Russia Deal

Vietnam's nuclear power ambitions have received a boost with Russia's Rosatom and Vietnam signing a significant agreement. The deal aims to revive the country's first nuclear power plant project, the Ninh Thuan 1, and follows recent high-level discussions and commitments.

Rosatom, a global leader in nuclear technologies, has agreed to provide its advanced VVER-1200 Generation 3+ reactor technology for the Ninh Thuan 1 plant. This technology is already in use in six units in Russia and Belarus, with many more under construction worldwide.

The agreement, signed in May, includes an inter-agency roadmap for developing nuclear technologies in Vietnam up to 2030. It also involves Power Engineering Consulting JSC 2 (PECC2), which will provide technical advisory and engineering services as a consulting and design company. PECC2 will update the plant's feasibility study and site profile, and collaborate on grid infrastructure development, logistics, specialist training, and related areas.

Hungary has also stepped in to support Vietnam's nuclear power development. It plans to train 1,000 nuclear power plant operators to help Vietnam establish its first nuclear facility.

The agreement between Rosatom and Vietnam marks a significant step towards Vietnam's goal of making nuclear power operational by the end of the decade. With international support and advanced technology, Vietnam is poised to expand its energy mix to include nuclear power.
