Volkswagen to Discontinue Touareg, Focus on Affordable SUVs

Volkswagen has announced that it will discontinue the production of the Touareg by the end of 2026, marking the end of its 24-year run as the company's flagship premium SUV. The Touareg, which was developed alongside the original Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7, will be replaced in the lineup by the more affordable and versatile Tayron, which will become Volkswagen’s largest SUV globally.

The Touareg, built on the MLB Evo platform, shares its development heritage with the Cayenne, Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus. However, the end of Touareg production does not imply the cessation of their production. Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini SUVs are positioned as more exclusive, premium offerings, and Volkswagen appears to be concentrating its premium SUV focus on these brands rather than on Volkswagen itself.

The Touareg's discontinuation is part of Volkswagen's strategic shift away from the premium market segment toward higher-volume, more affordable models like the Tiguan and Tayron. The new Q7 will be built on a different platform (PPC) than the Touareg and Tayron.

The growing importance of more affordable, modern models could be a factor in Volkswagen's decision not to revive the Touareg. In the first half of 2025, 10,800 Tayrons were registered in Germany compared to 3,345 Touaregs. The Tayron, based on the modern MQB-evo platform, is moving into the Touareg segment and offers seating for up to seven, making it slightly shorter than the Touareg.

It's unclear whether the potential production halt of the Touareg will affect the Bratislava plant, where these models are produced. The Euro-7 norm, requiring expensive adjustments, will come into effect in 2027. The alleged decision not to revive the Touareg might also be linked to the need to streamline costs and avoid overlap between Volkswagen and its luxury sister brands, possibly reinforcing the clear market segmentation among group marques: Volkswagen focusing on mass-market and affordable SUVs, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, and Lamborghini on premium and ultra-luxury SUVs.

The new Tayron, successor to the Tiguan Allspace, is expected to continue serving the premium market segment vacated by the Touareg, while the Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, and Lamborghini Urus will remain important flagship SUVs for their respective brands within the VW Group.

  1. Despite the discontinuation of the Touareg, the focus of the Volkswagen industry is shifting towards more affordable and versatile SUVs like the Tayron.
  2. The premium market segment, formerly occupied by the Touareg, is expected to be served by the new Tayron, while luxury sister brands like Porsche, Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini will continue to offer flagship SUVs.
  3. In the finance sector, the growing demand for modern, affordable vehicles could have influenced Volkswagen's decision not to revive the Touareg, as indicated by the higher registration figures of the more affordable Tayron in Germany.
  4. The automotive industry, particularly the transportation sector, may see changes in electric vehicles due to this strategic shift, as Volkswagen aligns its brand with more accessible and eco-friendly options.
