Wind Energy Expansion in Berlin: Gaebler Dangles Potential Turbine Locations

Hey there! Let's talk about wind energy in Berlin and the ongoing quest to find the most suitable locations for those mighty wind turbines.

According to the city's urban development chief, Christian Gaebler, the hunt for new wind turbine spots is far from over. A total of eight potential areas have been pointed out so far, with controversial choices on the table.

"There's a federal guideline mandating designated zones," Gaebler told RBB's "Abendschau," but think again, he warned, because even a designated area doesn't get the green light automatically.

"It's possible that a designated area won't work out at all," explained the SPD politician. "But if we didn't run through this process, fingers crossed, the entire city of Berlin could be a potential site for those massive wind turbines, which we'd rather avoid."

By law, cities like Berlin must dedicate a minimum 0.5% of their land to potential wind turbine locations.

The eight areas currently on the table include the Krummendammer Heide in Treptow-Köpenick, the southern Grunewald in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the Rieselfelder Karolinenhöhe in Spandau, or Buchholz Nord in Pankow, with wind turbines as high as 230 meters potentially sprouting up.

Now, it's true that by June 2025, Berlin already had eight operating wind turbines. But with the recent focus on renewable energy, the Berlin Senate wants to make some decisions on new wind farm locations by next year, according to Bausenator Christian Gaebler.

Citizens will have a chance to voice their opinions during a public consultation period from June 10th to July 11th, 2025. So, if any of the proposed locations give you wind, remember to let your thoughts be heard.

  1. Christian Gaebler, the Berlin Senate's Bausenator, has highlighted eight potential locations for the expansion of wind energy in Berlin, including Krummendammer Heide in Treptow-Köpenick, the southern Grunewald in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, and Buchholz Nord in Pankow.
  2. Gaebler emphasized that even designated areas for wind turbines don't guarantee approval, and the city aims to make decisions on new wind farm locations by next year, considering environmental science, industry, and finance factors.
  3. To ensure the community's participation in this decision-making process, a public consultation period will be held from June 10th to July 11th, 2025, for citizens to voice their opinions on the proposed wind turbine locations, contributing to the city's commitment to environmental-science and energy policy.
