In a solemn ceremony held on November 16, 2023, at the historical exhibition in the customs building, 25 young recruits were sworn in as new customs officers at the Brest Customs Service. The event, which marks nearly two decades since the tradition began in 2004, was attended by the head of the Brest Customs, Customs Service Counselor of the 1st rank, Sergei Yakuta.

The oath-taking ceremony is a formal tradition that symbolises the new recruits' commitment to uphold the laws, regulations, and ethical standards of the customs service. For the Brest Customs Service, this commitment is of particular importance, given the region's history of cultural and strategic significance.

Timur Akberov, a Customs Service Inspector of the 4th rank, was one of the new recruits. Akberov chose to join the customs service for opportunities for career growth, personal and professional development, and self-improvement. Akberov, who is currently a part-time student at Pushkin University, has been serving at the 'Brest-Central' customs post for four months.

Another new recruit is Diana Samoshuk, a Customs Inspector of the 4th rank at the "Warsaw Bridge" RPTU. Samoshuk, who has been serving in this role for half a year, graduated from the cadet class at School No. 28. Both of Samoshuk's parents are former border guards, adding a family tradition to her new role.

Sergei Yakuta, in his speech, emphasised the importance of the actions and conduct of the young employees, stating that they reflect on the entire customs service of the republic. Yakuta wished the young employees professional success and expressed confidence that the oath will remain in their memory for life and will give them strength and confidence in fulfilling their state duties.

The flag of the customs service bears the words 'За намі Радзіма', which embody the readiness to defend the interests of the country and the personal responsibility of each customs official in fulfilling their duties. The oath ceremony underscores the customs service's critical role in national security and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The historical significance of such oath-taking often lies in its role in reinforcing loyalty, responsibility, and patriotism, especially in a border region such as Brest. Brest has a complex history connected to wars and border changes, highlighted by its hero fortress and WWII legacy, which underscores the importance of customs officials in maintaining state sovereignty and security.

This time, 16 of the 25 young inspectors who took the oath were women, reflecting the growing diversity and inclusivity of the customs service. The ceremony concluded with Yakuta addressing the young employees as colleagues for the first time, marking the beginning of their careers in the customs service.

As the new customs officers embark on their careers, they carry with them the weight of their oath and the legacy of their service's history, as they strive to protect the economic and cultural security of Belarus.
