Get ready for a greener future, folks! Feralpi's Elbe Steelworks has taken a monumental step towards eco-friendly steel production with the grand unveiling of its state-of-the-art electric rolling mill in Riesa. "This new baby in Riesa is a testament to our ceaseless ambition and relentless pursuit of cutting-edge tech," declared Giuseppe Pasini, the president of the Italian steel juggernaut, at the opening ceremony of the futuristic plant. With this innovative stride, Feralpi is all set to beef up its clout in the global market and strive for a cleaner production process.

According to the company, this is the first rolling mill in Germany that doesn't emit CO2 directly during production - aka Scope 1 emissions. How does it do it? By ditching fossil fuels in favor of an inductive heating system! A colossal 300-meter roller table seamlessly connects the rolling mill with the continuous casting plant to further conserve energy and minimize emissions.

Kretschmer: A Dance of Economy and Environment

Saxony's Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) applauded Feralpi's commitment to the industrial ecosystem of Saxony and its efforts to produce green steel. "It's a powerful statement, especially during trying economic times," said the Minister President. "Businesses like Feralpi must continue to create a conducive environment that fosters value creation and technical transformation in competitive conditions." Kretschmer hit the nail on the head: we've got to buck up, define our own objectives, champion our own interests, and then march forward courageously, while making sure economy and ecology dance in harmony.

Feralpi budgeted a whopping 220 million euros for the venture - their heftiest single investment in Germany thus far. The expansion is projected to generate approximately 100 new jobs, swelling the workforce to around 950 employees.

Apart from the rolling mill, a spanking new scrap processing facility, a dedicated transformer station, and an overhaul in the plant's logistics have also been on the cards.

High Energy Prices Pose a Threat

President Pasini, however, cautioned about the exorbitant energy prices in Germany, which jeopardize the industry's competitiveness. Furthermore, scrap must be acknowledged as a vital strategic raw material for the circular economy.

Feralpi Steel cracks the top ten steel producers in Germany. Their plant in Riesa churns out construction steel primarily from recycled scrap.
