Stepping into a greener future, Italian steel giant Feralpi has unveiled its state-of-the-art electric rolling mill in the heart of Riesa, booming town in Saxony, marking a monumental stride towards sustainable steel production. Giuseppe Pasini, Feralpi's president, hailed the occasion as a testament to the company's long-term vision and unwavering dedication to technological innovation.
With the grand opening of this groundbreaking rolling mill, Feralpi aims to fortify its foothold in the global market and forge a more eco-friendly path in the manufacturing sector. The mill, the first of its kind in Germany, operates sans direct CO2 emissions, ushering in a new era of green steel production. This feat is made possible by an inductive heating system that ditches fossil fuels, a game-changer in the steel industry.
"It's a power move, especially in trying economic times." Saxony's Prime Minister, Michael Kretschmer (CDU), applauded Feralpi's commitment to the Saxon industrial scene and its pursuit of environmentally friendly steel manufacturing. He stressed the importance of fostering an environment where companies like Feralpi can thrive, driving both economic growth and technological progress. "We've got to toughen our chins, address our own demons, champion our own causes, and charge ahead fearlessly." Feralpi pooled over 220 million euros into the project, setting a new record for the largest single investment in its German history. Approximately 100 new jobs are expected to materialize as a result, swelling the workforce to approximately 950 employees.
Beyond the mill, a modernized scrap processing facility, a dedicated transformer station, and plant logistics have all received a much-needed makeover.
High energy prices, however, pose a threat to the steel industry's competitiveness, asserts Pasini. Additionally, he underscores the necessity of recognizing scrapped materials as a vital strategic resource for the circular economy.
Feralpi Steel, one of Germany's ten largest steel producers, operates predominantly from recycled scrap, churning out construction steel in the Riesa plant. The new mill represents Feralpi's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint while maintaining production efficiency and bolstering its green credentials.
